Senior Live Ops Game Designer (UK based candidates only)

Role Overview
A Senior Live Ops Designer at Coatsink is responsible for designing, balancing, and iterating on the core systems that shape the players’ experience for our ongoing Free to Play title. From progression and rewards to in-game economies and monetization loops, you’ll create engaging frameworks that keep players motivated and invested. You will work closely with product owners, analysts, UX designers, producers and developers to translate the game's vision into practical systems that scale over time, while adapting to feedback, data, and shifting priorities. This role is ideal for a designer who thrives in live environments, embraces iteration, and can balance creative ambition with business goals.
Responsibilities & Tasks
- Design, document, and balance gameplay systems ( progression, meta systems, special in-game promotions and events, etc.) using best UX practices
- Plan, communicate and iterate on comprehensive wireframe mock-ups
- Develop and fine-tune monetization strategies, including in-app purchases, progression systems, reward structures, and economy balancing
- Create and maintain design specs and feature documentation
- Collaborate with UI/UX, engineering, and art teams to bring systems from concept to implementation. (including creating Figma Whiteboxes / UX)
- Collaborate with data analysts to track KPIs, A/B test features, and iterate based on performance insights
- Own the design and iteration of the FTUE, ensuring new players understand core systems and are guided smoothly into long-term play
- Analyse player engagement and monetization data to optimize events and systems
- Coordinate with the live ops team to ensure smooth feature rollouts and updates
- Monitor performance of events and in-game systems post-launch, adjusting as needed
- Stay updated on industry trends, competitor analysis, and best practices in F2P monetization and engagement strategies
- Mentor junior designers or provide guidance on mobile system-level design thinking
- Undertake any other reasonable assigned duty, that is line with postholders skills, knowledge and ability
Person Specification
Qualifications
- Relevant university degree or a strong up to date project portfolio (Preferred but not required)
- May have additional postgraduate, management or continuing professional development
Experience
- 5+ years of experience in a Senior design-focused position on a LiveOps project/s for a F2P mobile game
- Some experience in a client facing role and being comfortable selling ideas is a great bonus
- Strong understanding of F2P economy design, monetization strategies, and player retention mechanics
- Experience designing and balancing LiveOps events, promotions, and engagement loops
- Proficiency in analysing KPIs, interpreting data, and iterating on designs based on performance
- Familiarity with A/B testing, segmentation, and CRM tools to optimize engagement strategies
- Strong collaboration and communication skills to work effectively in a cross-functional team
- Creative problem solver with a player-first mindset and a deep understanding of game design principles
- Experience using Atlassian software (Jira, Confluence etc) is ideal but not essential
- Experience leading a design team on a released title and supporting and coaching less experienced team members is a strong bonus
- Significant experience working within a variety of project management methodologies, such as SCRUM
- Experience of developing for mobile, significant experience is essential!

- Exceptional art / graphic design skills to help elevate design documentation and get ideas across
- The ability to lead, impart information, encourage and support junior or less experienced members of the team
- Deep understanding of free to play genre and mobile game design
